Position Title: Director of Development and Communications
Background and Scope of Responsibility
The Wallace Medical Concern is seeking a Director of Development and Communications to lead the fund development activities in support of our newly launched Primary Care Expansion Project (PCEP), a three-year initiative to expand primary care capacity to help meet significant health care access needs in the Rockwood community located in Gresham Oregon.
The Director of Development and Communications is a senior management position. The position provides oversight for all fundraising and communications program activities, and will serve on the Transition Leadership Team for the Primary Care Expansion Project.
The fundraising efforts in support of the PCEP are organized into three priority areas: continuation of the current successful fund raising program, development of new corporate and major gift strategies, and a 16-month Capital/Capacity Campaign. Each of these efforts requires specialized outreach, cultivation, and solicitation strategies. The Director of Development and Communications is responsible for organizing and managing the overall fundraising program with specific responsibility for corporate and major gift solicitation. Overall fundraising goal for all three program areas is $950,000.
Description of Duties and Responsibilities
- Organize, manage, and ensure strong coordination and implementation of all priority fundraising activities.
- Develop, organize and manage a campaign to meet the approximately $500,000 fundraising goal of the 16 month Capital/Capacity Campaign.
- Pursue outreach with local, regional and national foundations and be prepared to write letters of inquiry, proposals or contract with grant writer, and manage all forms of correspondence and relationship development leading to foundation support.
- Develop, organize and manage new major donor and corporation fundraising activities.
- Work with development staff and marketing consultants to ensure that communication and project collateral accurately and effectively reflect the organizations strategic, business, and fund development needs.
- Be prepared and capable of personally soliciting major gift donors of $10,000 and more.
- Assure development and maintenance of accurate reporting systems to track and disseminate fundraising progress.
- Supervise the activities of program/campaign manager, contract grant-writer, contract marketing/communications team, and volunteers.
- Assure and lead others in the use of current best practices in fundraising and marketing.
- Coordinate all publicity activities, including press releases, media interviews and public speaking engagements.
Accountability: Report directly to: Executive Director Support Finance Committee, and serve as staff liaison to the Fund Development and Marketing Committee.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position supervises Development Office staff, and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Development Department and volunteers.
Additional Accountability: Serve on The Transition Leadership Team led by the Executive Director, to provide oversight and support for completion of key expansion activities that include:
- submission of a grant application for federal designation as a 330 Community Health Center;
- cultivation of relationships and alliances with key community and industry partners;
- development of formal agreements for specialty referral relationships to support the care coordination needs of the medical home model;
- business plan and care plan development;
- launch of a capacity building capital campaign to support move into a new multi-service building hosted by Human Solutions---campaign will support systems development, and tenant improvement costs of a new clinic and administrative facility, and implementation of information technology, finance, billing, and practice management systems.
Qualifications:
- Ability to develop and implement strategies and programs for effectively raising funds to enhance, expand and continue agency efforts to accomplish mission and growth related goals and objectives;
- Knowledge and experience in fund raising, public relations, marketing, and strategic planning principles and practices;
- Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and implement public relations and resource development programs and activities;
- Senior management experience with at least 2 direct reports;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as represented in grant writing, report writing, public speaking, and effective team building;
- Excellent project management skills;
- Experience working in the health care safety net setting is preferred.
